Of particular note in Jasper's Day is the author's deft handling of the concept of euthanasia or having a pet "put to sleep". Most children's stories about pet death revolve around the pet getting old and sick and dying naturally, which doesn't reflect that pet owners often have to make a difficult decision about their own loss and their friend's suffering. This is an excellent book for families facing that choice to share, perhaps to help them create a special day for their own old friend.
