Pringle Rose runs away from Scranton, Pennsylvania with her younger brother Gideon after her parents are killed in a carriage accident and her aunt and uncle take over the family business and home. On the train ride west to Chicago, Pringle recounts the harrowing experiences with her aunt and uncle that lead to her decision to flee. Once in Chicago, Pringle discovers that her mother's oldest friend has been put in an insane asylum by her father. At a momentary loss, Pringle and Gideon end up staying with a family that she befriended on the train. As she and Gideon settle into their new lives, Chicago experiences many fires. When her new family's brother comes to visit, Pringle has a horrific surprise that leads her to another new life in San Francisco. Liberally sprinkled with many references to Alice in Wonderland, the reader will also learn about some of the social issues of 1871 -- women's suffrage, labor unrest, and animal rights.
