When the war ends, how do you leave your best friend behind? After losing his young family in a tragic accident, Fletcher Carson joins the flagging war effort in Vietnam. Deeply depressed, he plans to die in the war. But during one of his early missions, Fletcher rescues a critically wounded yellow Lab whom he nurses back to health and names Jack. As Fletcher and Jack patrol and survive the forests of Vietnam, Fletcher slowly regains the will to live.At the end of the war, the U.S. Government announces that due to the cost of withdrawal, all U.S. dogs serving in the war have been declared "surplus military equipment" and will not be transported home. For the hundreds of dog handlers throughout Vietnam, whose dogs had saved countless lives, the news is greeted with shock and disbelief. For Fletcher, he knows that if he abandons Jack, then he too will be lost. Ordered to leave Jack behind, he refuses--and so begins their journey.Based on the actual existence and abandonment of canine units in Vietnam, Gareth Crocker's Finding Jack is a novel of friendship and love under desperate circumstances that will grab your heart and won't let go.

The pages flew by as I read this book. A wonderful story that had me reaching for the kleenex box a few times. Will look for more by this author.

One question... Why does our library only have one novel of this excellent writer?

I have never cared to read war type stories. The only reason I did, was because I am a dog lover. This story had me so engrossed at the beginning. It was hard to put the book down. An awesome story! I also liked the fact that the chapters were very short, since I don't have a lot of time to read. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

One of the best books I have read. It is a story that the American people should hear. It is a story of something that happened in the Vietnam conflict that I don't think the average US citizen would know about.

This is a excellent book on courage and how animals can save us when everything around us seems to be falling apart. The only down-side was that by the end some of the story was stretched beyond believability.

This book was so moving. A thoroughly wonderful story about how animals can bring us back to ourselves when we've gotten lost.

This book is about a young man who tragically lost both his wife and his daughter. He wants to commit suicide but then decides to make his life count for something and enlists to fight in the Vietnam War.

While fighting in Vietnam, an injured dog approaches the soldiers one day.

The young man makes it his mission to save this gravely injured animal and gradually begins to care about something once again.
