You are cordially invited to a murder. A personal ad in the newspaper inviting strangers to participate in an evening of murder mystery fun and games at the home of Letitia Blacklock is an invitation that Miss Jane Marple cannot pass up. A good thing, too, because when the lights are dimmed real gunshots ring out, killing a young boy. Now it's time for a new, much more serious game of "whodunit."

Murder in a confined space where everyone is suspicious - I love such scheme. And this time Agatha Christy, in my opinion, has surpassed herself! I always find her books very cozy. No, you are not wrong. For me, reading her mystery novels is one of the favorite type of relaxing and de-stress myself. In this book, everything is puzzled - who killed, but most importantly - why! Only near the end, more or less, Christy opened up the identity of the offender, but the motive remained a mystery.

I am rereading the Agatha Christie novels, first read as a young adult 40+ years ago.
In this story, I can't believe I missed the blatant racism and strong, horrible feeling against foreigners, but I also missed the complete disregard for the experience of refugees who had experienced the violence of war first hand, probably from within concentration camps. And yet, the Brits despised their own demobbed soldiers, obviously suffering from trauma and left to roam the streets and shrubbery as discarded rejects.
Oh, Agatha... you were writing in the late 1940s, a woman well into her mature years.
I do wish that people were not so complicated.

Politically incorrect and almost hatefully racist in its mid-century attitudes toward European refugees -- along with doses of Christie's trademark anti-intellectualism (she obviously resented kitchen-sink realism, and presumed her readers basked in the same resentment) -- and yet, for all those missteps, the novel evolves into an excellent character study of a certain strata of British villagers. The post-war milieu, with black market wheeling & dealing taken for granted, feels gloriously lived-in. And it's an ingeniously plotted mystery, which is what really matters. No, I didn't guess who the murderer was. Considerably more accomplished piece of work than AC's Body in the Library and more cohesive than the episodic Sleeping Murder. Unlike those, this book never feels padded. I enjoyed spending time with these eccentric small-town folk. Some of it's contrived -- especially the gratuitous third murder. Oh, and I could have done without a major clue to unraveling the crime inadvertently solved by an annoying house cat. Despite this, the puzzle remains satisfying...

Miss Marple isn't the best character, but the book's great, anyway.

No-one gives a crap if you guessed the culprit!

Exactly what you would expect. A clever, fun and fast read.

I guessed the killer in this one, but was nevertheless left in a crazy amount of suspense, desperately reading through to see if I was right! One of my favorite Miss Marple mysteries (the others being "Sleeping Murder" and "4:50 from Paddington").

A must read for all Christie fans! "A Murder Is Announced" is an entertaining novel with many shocking twists. The premise is interesting and perhaps the killer could have gotten away with such a perfect crime if it weren't for the ingenuity of elderly spinster Jane Marple.

Another book of the hundreds of successful Agatha Christie books! It is interesting but it wasn't magical like her other books that I used to read, although it has a beautiful new idea - a murder in the newspaper - sounds interesting haa? But even the characters weren't that charming - not in their personality nor in their conversation. Usually Agatha Christie gives us a lot of suspects. In this novel there are maybe 2 or 3 people that we may think are the killers and guess who solved a part of the crime? I did!! I guessed who was the killer from the beginning and I am very proud because I am good at solving crimes and mysteries now and who knows? Maybe I will end up being a detective! I give this book 6.5/10

This book is very good! It is a little unrealistic, but still has a good plot.
