Helen McCarter would seem to have it all. She's married to Charles who is one of Atlanta's most successful attorneys. But despite having wealth and prestige, things are not as they seem in the McCarter home. On the evening of their anniversary, Charles drops a bombshell on Helen - he's divorcing her for another woman. Thrown out of the house with nowhere to go, Helen moves in with her grandmother Madea, a sassy woman with no shortage of opinions and a gun that she's not afraid to use. As Madea helps Helen get back on her feet emotionally, she meets Orlando, a nice and handsome man who is obviously attracted to her. But after her experiences with Charles, Helen isn't sure if she's ready to trust a man again.

I, too was put off by the raw emotion experienced (and well acted) by the wife, but watching karma unfold helped ease my discomfort. I like Perry, as he knows how to push you through these feelings and situations, and then subdue your emotions with the humorous antics of Madea. While it is not likely that the wife would have found that needle in a haystack man, or that her husband would have transformed himself into such a humble person after displaying such severe narcissism, the story is one of hope and forgiveness...all too hard to master at such harrowing conditions. Whether you are a religious person or not, Perry's value for community, church, and pastoral support are humbling. I think anyone who has been through hard times might enjoy his films, as they are both raw and comforting simultaneously.

I believe this to be an excellent film. It well displays the environment in which the film was made should one notice the church influence.

Tyler Perry's first TRANSSEXUAL train wreck of a so-called comedy movie based on a play period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The humiliation the main character is willing to put up with as the trophy wife of a callous lawyer is real, and you feel for her struggle to stop emotionally caring for her husband. Her bitterness is understandable, but it lasts so long that it makes her a bit unlikable. It's hard to understand what the romantic lead sees in her, aside from her appearance. But otherwise, a fun and moving Tyler Perry movie.
