A thoroughly engrossing read. Favourite passages included L’Amour’s rich descriptions of the desert and what it took to survive in that harsh wilderness at the time of the Indian Wars, his empathetic portrayal of the Apache peoples, and Hondo’s interactions with his dog, Sam, and with Johnny, the 6-year-old son of the novel’s romantic interest.

Vivid descriptions. Tense situations. A story of the untamed West and the struggles between the Apaches and the white settlers which reminds us of the humanity on both sides of the conflict.
