Dialogue all in German so I had to read the subtitles through the whole movie. Yet I was fully enthralled. This is one of the better movies I've seen so far. Story, directing and acting were all excellent. There is always something 'real' about European movies and this one is no different. The ending was a little surprising, but that's what made this movie so good. Nothing really predictable; anti-Hollywood. Great movie. I highly recommend it.

I was interested through most of the film...until the ending, which was a big disappointment.

So, Diane Kruger won a "Golden Globe" for her portrayal of a vengeful wife of a murdered scuzz-ball Turkish immigrant and their "Dondi" son. All the "acting" in the world can't save this one from it's pathetic script. Despite lots of tattoos and dope ingesting, the one-dimensional script declares her as a heroine as pure as the blown snow. For the proper treatment of this sort of material see Ivan Passer's "Cutter's Way" or William Richert's "Winter Kills".

I hate to say this cause I am usually pretty good at remembering what I watched. I actually had to read the summary because I don't remember a thing about this film! So, Just to be fair I am not going to rate this one. Check it out at your own caution... And let me know how it went.

Not an action flick - More a psychological drama. Some people may be bored with this film. Those who stick with it will be rewarded with the ending.

It is no slight to Diane Kruger, who was deservedly prized at Cannes for her fine performance, to think that this film has probably won praise more for its message than for its inherent quality (though the editing is technically very good). The drama is presented as a triptych, but only the middle section (the trial) is genuinely transfixing. Why the title 'Into the Fade' was chosen for foreign distribution is a mystery. The original German title translates as 'out of the blue' or 'out of nowhere', which seems a lot more appropriate to what happens in the film. In any case, definitely worth seeing.

People who say it's not your typical revenge movie are correct. This movie stays truer to the human nature of a grieving and angry mother who is on a path to discover what happened. The character development and growth of the two main characters is well played and it is a very good drama film. For those who like little plot and character development that goes in straight lines and lots of action/explosions, this may not be for you. This is a deeper movie that dives into human emotion and connection.

The two 1 star reviews do not enjoy drama movies, they want guns and shoot em up. Which this film is not.

This is a German film, in German language with English subtitles. You can also watch in English with other actors recording the dialogue in English. If you read the synopsis of the film plot, you will, wrongfully it turns out, assume this is some kind of action drama – a “who killed my family” revenge film. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is a family relationship drama snoozefest wrapped up like a revenge-against-terrorists action plot vehicle. Unfortunately, this film was incredibly slow for me – I kept wanting to fast forward through parts of it because of the lingering awkward silences that must make up 1/3 of the film’s run time. It is possible the film maker was trying to convey the intense awkwardness of trying to find your way after suffering such loss, but it pulled me out of the film which is the opposite of what the mood for the film should be doing. What a boring, boring film. This felt like a great 20 minute short that was dragged out to feature length. That almost never happens to good effect. Finally, to market the film as “gripping” and “she wants justice” is simply misleading. There is nothing gripping about the pace or characters in this film. It is as if the screenwriter/director couldn’t decide if he wanted a quiet emotional drama or a powerful thiller, so the film switches back and forth to incredibly disastrous effect. One conceit I found interesting and enjoyed – the passage of time being marked not just by showing the yard in different weather, but the friend’s pregnancy. I thought that was a clever touch.

SPOILER ALERT:

Final calling card:

Between 2000 and 2007 in German, the “National Socialist Underground” shot nine people from immigrant backgrounds and a policewoman and carried out multiple bombings. The sole motive behind their attack was their victims’ non-Germans origin.
