Not to be confused with the Dr. Dre/Jimmy Iovine documentary. Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis are convicts chained together who escape after a crash (like "The Fugitive"). First they fight, but then they get along and kind of solve racism, I think. Performances, esp. Poitier's, are good, as is the b&w cinematography, which won an Oscar, but there's a bad love story subplot and it's a bit preachy, as director/producer Stanley Kramer's movies tend to be. He gave us the Nuremberg Trials ("Judgement at Nuremberg"), the Scopes Monkey Trial ("Inherit the Wind"), and nuclear apocalypse ("On the Beach"). Basically remade in the 90's as "Fled" with Laurence Fishburne and Stephen "Brother of Alec" Baldwin.

Classic film from 1958 with Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier portraying two escaped convicts from some Southern prison. They are bound together by wrist-linked shackles and must learn how to adapt and work together if they want to survive. Most of the local police believe they will kill each other before they get too far away. They encounter problems from both nature and from people who seem to have their own criminality (a lynch mob) and differing thoughts on humanity or justice. They encounter a lonely, abandoned housewife who feels as if she is imprisoned in her solitude. Can they overcome their own hatred and biases to survive? Great performances by Curtis and Poitier.

One can not give enough praise to such wonderful movie as 'The Defiant Ones"! Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier give great performances as two escaped convicts chained together. The movie is a powerful statement of the absurdities of racism. It is comical at times and sad at other times. The movie in my mind takes a place on the 100 Best Movies Ever Made. I regret that KCLS only has one copy of the film. If by chance you have not seen "The Defiant Ones", your missing one of the best movies ever filmed!
