An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.

An eleven-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King's propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

Solid King. Suspenseful, but not overtly scary.

If you are a Stephen King fan, you will probably enjoy this (as long as really graphic details about a crime don't bother you). If you are not a fan, this will almost certainly not make you one.

Steven King is truly on top of his form here: a carefully restrained but gripping tale of fear and possession, mystery and serial killings, with overt homage somehow to both Agatha Christie and Harlan Coben, Poe and Bram Stoker. King's narrative remains tight and compelling to the end of the book, which isn't always a strength in the longer novels.

Crime and surreal horror mashup like only King can do!

My first try at Stephen King - and last. Though King is a good writer his plot victim was a disgusting scenario. Felt ashamed reading it. Where can I enter my two stars?

Typical King novel with lots of action, interesting characters and a formula ending that never quite delivers the villains true nature. Good read though. I would recommend it if you like King 👑. 😊

I agree with the last comment. I wish he could've had an ending that was more real life. You can solve anything by blaming legends or little green men. Don't run into that much in real life.

This book was well-written and an easy and enjoyable read, howver, I feel like there was so much missed opportunity with this storyline that could have fine in a different direction with more suspense. It became less believable toward the end.

It was wonderful to see Mr. King get back in touch with his roots and write a creepy, legend-inspired, page-turner that you won't want to read just before you fall asleep. The story isn't entirely vintage King, but is close enough that those of us who fell in love with the early books could feel all the old chills and shudders. King's maturity as a writer is evidenced by his deeply developed and complex characters, all flawed in some ways, but able to forge a Tolkienesque fellowship for the destruction of the titular Outsider.

I don't blame King for deviating from the early books that made him famous. No author wants to continually write the same book for 40 years. Well, no talented writer does. And while I haven't liked his recent work as much, there were a few titles I really liked, but for different reasons. I found this blend of the old with the new very satisfying and hope he writes another similar book for his long time fans in the near future.

Had the making of a great story, then he ruined it...AGAIN! Shape shifting mythical creature feeding off of sadness, horrible!! There are so many other great books out there, don't waste your time on this. This was my fist and last Stephen King, my husband warned me, but I didn't listen. My bad.
