Combining elements of D.H. Lawrence's "The Rainbow" with "Women in Love," this adaptation focuses on the lives of two sisters, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen, as they struggle with their own loves, desires, passions, and relationships with two friends, Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich. As Ursula and Birkin's friendship and love develops, Gudrun and Gerald's stormy and destructive relationship begins to spiral out of control.

I found this adaptation bland and un-engaging. Slept through it several times before finally soldiering through to the end...

Lawrence adapts well to the screen and there have been many very successful productions of his novels and short stories on both TV and in the cinema, not least the Ken Russell film of Women in Love. This, though, doesn't begin to work for me. The earthiness of Lawrence, instantly identifiable by his settings, language and people, has gone missing and we have a kind of Hollywoodized combination of The Rainbow and Women in Love. People new to the author will probably find far more pleasure in it than I did - I have to admit I have pretty set preconceptions about how his works should look on screen and this production jarred on me.

This is a good adaptation and production if you like DH Lawrence's novel, which, to me, has always seemed a bit too much like a male fantasy--but it does illustrate the social pressures women faced at the time.

Very good remake by BBC.
I would like to see the original with Oliver Reed and Alan Bates.
