Just when you think things can't get any more bleak, they do. Susan Hill's the Rohinton Mistry of the coal mine.
quite a shift from her detective fiction - very dark, hopeless and sad
This book is horrible, with misery on every page and a ghastly ending. The bad guys come out unscathed and the good guys are cruelly punished. There are a couple of turns of the plot that are simply not credible and this reader did not appreciate being expected to believe that the character concerned would take this course of action. I am very disappointed in the author and will be sticking to her detective stories only from now on.
