If I had to compare the action amount and quality between this book and the one before it, I would say that the second book has a good continuous flow while this one had a good start, pause, then play at the end. They were both okay, but they would be my automatic recommendations unless I knew the person liked "teens/kids with powers" idea. I am not quite sure what distinct genre this would fall into, but I feel like it would be a dystopian/action/suspense mix for sure. This trilogy/series reminded me heavily of Robinson Wells' Blackout, which I found okay but also not the greatest. I wouldn't say the romance is a waste of space, but it really could be better developed. I really do ship Ruby and Cole... sigh.

Although this is a pretty good book, I don't really like how the characters are portrayed. Ruby has way too many mental breakdowns in this book, and sometimes the plot was just plodding along, and other times it was lightning fast. What I don't get is WHY they don't just already kill Clancy. Like, seriously. We all know he'll just find a way to mess up what they plan, and it is so obvious I sometimes want to hit my head on the wall. Plus, I didn't really like the ending. It was way too sad, and again, Ruby had like her twentieth breakdown. If I hadn't already read Never Fade, I would've been seriously confused with questions like who's Jude, and what do the colors mean?

Ruby needs to pull it together. She can't lose anyone else. She won't let allow herself to fail the ones she loves again.

The remains of the Children's League is trying to get by, hiding from the military in the sectioned-off ruins that once was the city of Los Angeles. It's hard to find enough food, let alone keep Clancy subdued and deal with the Jude-shaped hole in her heart. When she finds out that the people who are supposed to be protecting them may be planning a betrayal, she tells Cole and begins down a path of hard decisions as she generally takes his side in most, if not all, strategy and op plans. As she begins to build a bond with Cole, both knowing how difficult it is to try and contain the monsters inside them, she can feel her relationship with Liam fraying. She's kept him at arms distance and starts looking down on his impulsive decision, making the bit of tension between them worse. In the search for the cure and how it can work, Ruby tries to juggle the search for Lillian Gray (Clancy's mom), the need to liberate Thurmond, and the overall exhaustion that continues to plague her. Will she break under the pressure, or will she surprise us all?

I just finished reading this book last night, and I just gotta say... I can't even...! Really, I can't describe how this book made me feel because it just can't be put into words, it was insane! There were so many points in the book where I just couldn't put it down! While there are still some questions that I wish could have been answered a bit more clearly in the end, it was a great conclusion to the trilogy! If you haven't read this book, or if you haven't read ANY of 'The Darkest Minds' trilogy, do! Its worth the read!
