Bear loves to fish! Hare likes picnics.Together, these friends go out for a day of fun. Things do not go quite as expected though. As Bear fishes, each turning page brings a surprise; a rollerskate, a hat, but never a fish. Hare on the other hand, just can't enjoy his lunch, because objects keep landing on him. As the day passes, Bear tries and tries, but only becomes more dejected. Neither of these friends speak a word, nor does the narrator describe their thoughts, yet we don't need these because their faces portray exactly what they feel. Hare's humourous reactions strike a great balance next to Bear's varying states. Crayons give a fluffy or gentle feel to these creatures, especially against the solid white (land), and light blue (water) backgrounds. Simple repeating words, along with the "reveal", will engage children right up to the moment where an unexpected twist occurs. The finale, and Hare's funny involvement in it, will delight readers.
